Maybe, maybe not.

How about something to do with Maiar (a lesser Valar), and then proceed to a Valar itself. Both Gandalf and Sauron were Maiar.

Could also include the Istari as a rank somewhere.

They are the singular versions, but you could have the term so they're represented in the plural form.
