Back before all the 'cool kids' were playing MMOs with graphic interfaces, I learned how to MUSH.  One of my favourites has been ElendorMUSH (http://www.elendor.net/).  It's become one of my favourites for the shear amount of RP that is possible (as opposed to all the PvE and PvP that goes on on MMOs), although granted, it is in need of lots of new players.

Something like that.  There are commands to move between rooms, ones to talk (SAY <whatever your character is say>), ones for actions (: <whatever your character is doing>), etc.

It is.  Fun to, so long as you're more into RP than PvE/PvP

There's a client you can download and you just input the site information into, then you connect and create a character.  Local Admin approve and +culture you into the org you asked for (the Shire, Ered Luin, Erebor, Imladris, etc.), and away you go. :^)

Well, the basic setting is there.  It's frozen at Middle Earth between Bilbo leaving the Shire and before Frodo & Co. head to Imladris.

You can do your own scenes easily enough.  Just start RPing your character in day-to-day interactions.   There are also small TinyPlots every once in a while, and sometimes trips are organized (The Dwarfs of Ered Luin and Erebor are currently in Bree at the moment.
