I did wonder about this in the films. They're wearing fine plate male, have mithril helmets and are supposed to be skilled warriors - the ones who have kept Mordor at bay all these years.

Yet they do get beaten up so easily.

Maybe Peter Jackson wanted to portray the total overwhelming number of enemy soldiers...but even so, that doesn't really mean the Gondorians had to be so pathetic.

I agree with both of you. I just saw Return of the king and it was sad to see how easily they were beaten. Alpha probably has a point though about Peter Jackson's attempt to portray the number of enemy soldiers.

yeah, but no warrior can match the skill of the high elves. i guess that the soldiers of gondor would be better if the odds were a bit more even. but still, they should not die so easily, with their heavy armour and all.

Kinda odd you bring the elves into this - they aren't connected in this situation.

I guess even with all their special toys, they were still no match for the prowess of my forces.

And yet Sauron was defeated....by the ends of two 3 foot high beings.

You should be embarassed.

I was mainly counting Frodo and Gollum, but yes, Sam was also vitally important.

hmm it's a bit philosophical problem - we can say, that th Ring is thing which everyone wants and it's making evil out of intensions of bearer (doesnt matter - good or bad), so Ring was injecting lies and evil thoughts into Gollum and Frodo's minds, so it destiny (we can explain it as Sauron's thoughts and bad intensions covering bearers life - as it was with Morgoth and children of Hurin ) brought it to the end. So if the Ring was part of Sauron, we can say that (at least partly) it was destroyed by itself.

hmm I hope I wrote what I was thinking about Smiley

Okay.  Here is the real reason the soldiers sucked.  they had a weak leader in Denethor for so long.  He was a weak spineless thing who grew weaker at the loss of his beloved son, Boromir.  In the face of fear, his cowardice eeked out to his troops.  Only when Mithrandir arrived on the scene did things turn around, but by then the enemy was on the doorstep.  Also, Gondor had already suffered heavy losses.
